| Salary: | Unpaid. Reasonable expenses incurred while travelling to meetings can be claimed from the organisation. |
| Level of commitment required: | Bimonthly board meetings. The Treasurer is also expected to have regular meetings with the CEO to review financial performance. Additional time may be required to prepare for board meetings and when appropriate to lead on financial initiatives. |
Role of the Treasurer
The role of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the S.H.E. UK’s finances, ensure its financial viability and ensure proper financial records and procedures are maintained.
Duties of the Treasurer
In addition to standard trustee responsibilities, the Treasurer directly oversees the financial health, compliance, and strategic planning of S.H.E. UK.
- Financial Governance & Oversight:
- Budgeting & Strategy: Oversee the annual budgeting cycle and ensure financial resources meet both current and future needs.
- Reporting: Present regular management accounts, KPI performance, and additional board-requested financial reports to the trustees.
- Committee Chair: Chair the Finance and Risk subcommittee.
- Board Advisory: Keep the board fully informed of its financial duties and responsibilities.
2. Regulatory Compliance & Controls:
- Year-End Accounts: Ensure annual accounts are prepared, properly disclosed for regulators/funders, and externally audited or scrutinised as required.
- AGM Presentation: Formally present the year-end accounts at the Annual General Meeting in a clear, accessible manner.
- Internal Controls: Maintain and enforce robust accounting procedures, operational controls, and bank account signatory duties.
3. Risk, Policy & Operations
- Policies: Establish and maintain appropriate policies for reserves, investments (ensuring no conflict with charity aims), and insurance coverage.
- Operations: Oversee payroll processing, including salaries, PAYE, National Insurance, pensions, expenses, and regulatory submissions.
- Collaboration: Partner with the CEO on financial matters and contribute to the fundraising and income generation strategy.
PERSON SPECIFICATION – S.H.E. UK TREASURER
In addition to the specification for a standard trustee the Treasurer requires the following qualities:
- Financial qualifications and experience
- Knowledge of management accounting and budgeting.
- An understanding that charity accounting differs to corporate accounting – and a willingness to learn if you have no experience.
- Knowledge of the Charity Commission Statement of Recommended practice (SORP) for annual reporting to the Commission.
- Ability to communicate and explain financial information simply.
- The skills to analyse proposals and plans and to examine their financial consequences.
- Being prepared to make unpopular recommendations to the board.
- A willingness to be available to the CEO and other relevant staff for advice and enquiries on an adhoc basis.
